Andreescu accepted a wild card into National Bank Open after leading her country to victory at Hopman Cup last week.
The 2019 US Open champion, Bianca Andreescu has withdrawn from the National Bank Open on Tuesday, citing torn ligaments in her ankle. Her injury incurred during her first-round victory over Barbora Krejcikova. The Canadian ace decided to not continue in the competition and Mirra Andreeva got a walkover win in the second round.
“It definitely sucks because this has happened before,” Andreescu said in a press conference. “Honestly, guys, I don’t have much to say. It’s really frustrating for me and my team, obviously. We’re doing the best that we can to prevent these things, but yeah, it’s tough.”
Bianca Andreescu has pulled out of her home tournament in Montreal.

She injured her ankle on match point in her last match against Barbora Krejcikova.
Truly cannot believe this woman’s luck… she deserves better.
Hopefully she’s able to recover quickly.

Bianca Andreescu won her first-round clash against Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam winner in straight sets. The former US Open champion turned her ankle and fell to the ground on match point while serving for the match against Krejcikova. Despite the ankle sprain, Andreescu completed her match but she was sure that playing the second-round game is not good for her recovery.
It was the first hard-court tournament for Andreescu since the Wimbledon qualifiers. The 25-year-old failed to reach the main-draw of the competition in the Wimbledon and French Open. She has gone through the injuries throughout her career. She made return to the court at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in the spring and reached fourth round.
Really difficult scene here in Montreal. Bianca Andreescu is serving for the match, and turned her ankle on a return – going down immediately in pain – screaming “why does this always happen to me”. Andreescu accepted a wild card into National Bank Open after leading her country to victory at Hopman Cup last week. She is currently outside the top-100 in the WTA rankings and yet to play her first Grand Slam main-draw match since the first-round US Open exit last year.
Andreescu is looking to get the recovery process fast so she can get ready for the Cincinnati Masters and US Open. “It’s kind of a day-to-day thing,” said Andreescu. “I’m hoping to be ready for Cincinnati, but yeah, we don’t know. Can’t say.”
“It was out of nowhere,” she added more on the injury. “Just happened. I mean, we work proprioception every single day. We do foot exercises, ankles. Yeah, we can’t really explain it. Maybe it was emotions. Maybe I was a little bit tired. I just stepped in a weird way.
