Shelton Begins US Open against Qualifier Ignacio Buse in First-Round test
Sixth seed Ben Shelton will face qualifier Ignacio Buse in the first round of the 2025 US Open. Shelton, now ranked world No. 6, has been one of the season’s most exciting names, with several deep runs despite moments of inconsistency. Most recently, he was stopped by Alexander Zverev in the Cincinnati quarterfinals and earlier won in Toronto with a gritty three-set victory over Karen Khachanov.
The Brit’s year also includes a finals appearance in Munich, semifinal runs in Melbourne, Stuttgart, and Washington, and quarterfinal finishes at both Wimbledon and Indian Wells. Statistically, Shelton’s big lefty serve remains a weapon, producing 513 aces while winning 75% of first-serve points, 27% on first-serve returns, and converting 42% of his 277 break-point opportunities.

Buse, meanwhile, has made his mark primarily on the Challenger circuit. After a slow start to the year, the No. 1 Peruvian found rhythm with a title in Heilbronn, a quarterfinal in Vicenza, and semifinal runs in Santiago, Menorca, Aix-en-Provence, and Cancun. He carried that momentum into the main tour, reaching the Gstaad semifinals before falling to Juan Cerundolo in straight sets. Over the season, Buse has struck 20 aces, won 72% of first-serve points, 28% on first-serve returns, and converted 28% of break-point chances.

Shelton’s firepower and recent Toronto title should see him dominate, but if Buse can settle quickly and extend rallies, he may test the American in patches. Regardless, Shelton has the edge with his huge serve and experience on home courts.

And that's why I'm on the hype train. He's not the most consistent player outside of Slams, but he turns up when it matters most. He loves a stage.
