Ben Johnson Sets High Standards for Leaving Detroit Lions for Head Coach Role

Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson emphasizes he’ll only leave for the "perfect opportunity," with the Chicago Bears among his potential suitors.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has made his criteria for leaving clear: he won’t accept a head coaching role unless it’s the perfect fit. Known for his exceptional work with the Lions, who currently boast a 12-1 record, Johnson isn’t rushing to exit one of the NFL‘s most thriving organizations.

Unlike many coaches eager to climb the ranks, Johnson is approaching the hiring cycle with caution. He’s only interested in interviewing for positions he’s genuinely drawn to, emphasizing that he’s not looking for “just a job.”

“He has two criteria: organizational alignment and recognition from a team of its mistakes with a willingness to fix them, He will sell teams on his vision, to see whether they’re willing to go all in on it.” : Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote.

His thoughtful approach is evident from his past actions. In 2023, Johnson declined an in-person interview with the Carolina Panthers, even though many believed he was the frontrunner for their head coaching job.

Johnson also interviewed with other NFL teams, including the Washington Commanders, Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Chargers, and Atlanta Falcons. He even expressed interest in the Chicago Bears’ head coaching position last year, but the team chose to retain Matt Eberflus instead.

Despite his growing reputation and the demand for his leadership, Johnson remains committed to the Lions for now. His loyalty is deeply appreciated by head coach Dan Campbell, who has expressed nothing but praise for Johnson, who stayed with the team for six years.

Ben Johnson Notable Among Potential Candidates for Bears Head Coach Position

The Chicago Bears, now searching for a new head coach after firing Matt Eberflus on Black Friday, have Johnson high on their wish list. He’s joined by other top candidates, such as Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, and former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel.

The Chicago Bears are limited in their ability to interview current coaches until the regular season ends, and potentially even longer depending on those teams’ playoff runs. However, Mike Vrabel, who isn’t coaching this season, is free to interview at any time and theoretically, the Bears could hire him immediately if they chose to.

Bears might benefit from prioritizing an offensive-minded head coach, particularly to aid in the development of rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. Williams has faced significant struggles this season, though a lack of support from the environment and coaching staff hasn’t helped. Interim head coach Thomas Brown struggled in his debut, and former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron didn’t have much success either.

Williams’ performance in Sunday’s 38-13 loss to the 49ers highlighted the challenges, as he threw for just 134 yards while the Bears managed only 13 points. Many believe Ben Johnson could be the spark Chicago needs. As a proven offensive-headed coach, Johnson might just have the vision to get Williams back on track and transform the Bears into a potent offensive force.

Sources say the Bears are casting a wide net and plan to talk to additional candidates, but Johnson is among their most sought-after options. His ability to transform Detroit’s offense and his deliberate approach to leadership make him an attractive choice.
