Haddad Maia draws lucky loser Krueger in Bad Homburg opener
Beatriz Haddad Maia is set to open her Bad Homburg run against lucky loser Ashlyn Krueger. The Brazilian was originally drawn to face Berlin’s breakout star Xinyu Wang, who had impressed with a run to the final last week before falling to Marketa Vondrousova. However, Wang withdrew, reportedly to rest and prepare for Wimbledon, though no official reason was given. Her withdrawal paved the way for Krueger’s entry, as the American fell in the final round of qualifying to Katerina Siniakova in straight sets.

Maia has had a modest singles campaign, with highlights including a semifinal run in Strasbourg and third-round finishes in Melbourne and Merida, along with a last-16 showing in London. Her doubles season, however, has offered brighter moments.
Most recently, she teamed up with Laura Siegemund to win the Nottingham title, upsetting Danilina and Shibahara in the final. In singles, Maia has played 23 matches so far, serving 59 aces, winning 62.3% of first-serve points, and converting 40.7% of break points.

Krueger, on the other hand, started the year strong with back-to-back quarterfinals in Brisbane and Adelaide. After a brief dip with a first-round loss in Melbourne, she surged to the Abu Dhabi final, defeating Leylah Fernandez and Linda Noskova before falling to Belinda Bencic in three sets.
Since then, though, her results have cooled, failing to go beyond the round of 16 in any event. Statistically, she’s played 31 matches, hitting 111 aces, winning 64.6% of her first serves, and converting 48.7% of break points.

Beatriz Haddad Maia holds a 1-0 edge over Ashlyn Krueger in their budding head-to-head. Their only meeting came recently in Strasbourg, where the Brazilian secured a straight-sets win, edging out a tight first-set tiebreak.
As they prepare to square off for the second time, the stage is set for either Maia to reinforce her edge or for Krueger to change the narrative. Either way, this rematch is sure to be interesting.

Maia’s singles season may lack standout results, but her recent form in doubles and consistency in baseline exchanges could give her the edge. Krueger started the year hot but has cooled off since Abu Dhabi. Unless she rediscovers that early-season spark, Maia’s steadiness might see her through.
