Barcelona’s Commanding 4-0 Win Against Borussia Dortmund: Three Key Takeaways

Raphinha and Lewandowski Break Champions League Club Record, Yamal Dazzles, and Dortmund Face Uphill Battle in the Second Leg.

Barcelona delivered a stellar performance in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg. Holding a good advantage, they ended up thrashing Borussia Dortmund 4-0 at home. A clinical display from the Blaugrana, credit to Raphinha, Lamine Yamal goals and a Robert Lewandowski brace, leaves them firmly in control ahead of the second leg in Germany.

1. Barcelona’s Multi-Goal Prowess Continues

Barcelona’s front three of Raphinha, Lewandowski, and Yamal were unstoppable on the night. They created constant danger for a tough Dortmund defence. But the stronger the defense, the better they became to get the lead. Raphinha and Lewandowski’s goals also made club history in the competition.

This is the first time since the legendary Messi-Neymar partnership in 2014-15 that two Barcelona players have scored 10+ goals in a single UCL campaign. Raphinha now sits on 12 goals, while Lewandowski has 11. Hence, they’ve surpassed Messi and Neymar’s 10-goal hauls from that treble-winning 2014-15 season.

Lamine Yamala, who is still just 17, was another standout. His flair and movement tormented Dortmund’s left side, and he capped his brilliant performance with a composed finish to score Barcelona’s fourth goal. Yamal now has three Champions League goals this season.

2. Raphinha’s Goal Sparks Offside Debate

Raphinha’s first goal was Barcelona’s first goal. And it stirred controversy, with Dortmund players appealing for offside in the build-up. However, replays showed that Raphinha was clearly onside when Pau Cubarsi shot the ball that went towards Raphinha which he tapped-in for the goal.

He may have been ahead of the defenders when he had the ball in his feet. But the offside rule takes count of the attackers’ position when their teammate passes the ball to them, not when they receive it. UEFA confirmed the VAR review upheld the goal correctly. While tight, the decision aligned with current regulations, and the goal stood.

3. Dortmund’s Uphill Battle in Second Leg

Dortmund’s hopes of reaching back-to-back Champions League finals now hang by a thread. Niko Kovac’s men were completely overwhelmed in the first leg. They struggled to cope with Barcelona’s movement and clinical finishing. There definitely were a few glimpses of attacking intent.

The intent was especially visible from Serhou Guirassy and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Even so, Dortmund failed to find the net, which leaves them needing a miracle in the return fixture. Trailing by four goals, they must score at least four without reply to force extra time. Or, they need to score five to win outright.

That would be an almost impossible task against a Barcelona side that has now kept three consecutive clean sheets in Europe. Additionally, the absence of key defender Nico Schlotterbeck because of injury clearly hurt Dortmund’s defensive organization. Barcelona, meanwhile, are cruising toward a first Champions League semi-final appearance since 2019.
