Fonseca defeats Davidovich Fokina in straight sets to win Basel crown

At the Swiss Indoors Basel on Sunday, Joao Fonseca capped off a stunning week by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4 to win his second tour-level title and his first at the ATP 500 level. The 19-year-old Brazilian, playing fearless tennis in the biggest match of his young career.

Fonseca outpowered the eighth seed to deny the Spaniard a first career title, extending Davidovich Fokina’s record in tour-level finals to 0-5. Fonseca became the third-youngest player to win an ATP 500 event since the series began in 2009 and the first Brazilian to capture a title above the ATP 250 level since Gustavo Kuerten triumphed in Cincinnati in 2001.

Fonseca’s Breakthrough Season Reaches New Heights

Following the win, Fonseca jumped into his box to embrace his coach and family in an emotional celebration. The victory lifts his season record to 25-15 and propels him to a career-high No. 28 in the ATP Rankings. The teenager’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric.

“It is crazy. I want to thank my family and my coaches who helped me achieve this amazing effort,” Fonseca said after the match. “My parents just came from Brazil. They were coming to Paris and changed their flights and came here one hour before the match with my uncles. It is just amazing to have them here for the biggest title of my career. It is a pleasure playing this sport and this tournament and I am very happy.”

In Basel, Fonseca’s power and precision shone once again. He struck 28 winners to 19 unforced errors, hitting his forehand at an average speed of 81 mph, six mph faster than Davidovich Fokina. The Brazilian dominated from the baseline, converting his fourth set point in the opener and sealing the victory after 86 minutes.

After capturing the Next Gen ATP Finals crown in Jeddah in 2024, Fonseca opened the 2025 season with a breakthrough win over Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open, earning his first Top 10 victory. He later clinched his maiden ATP Tour title in Buenos Aires, becoming the youngest South American champion in ATP history.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
