Aston Villa delivered a nail-biter pushing PSG into a corner for the final half of the game. Taking nothing away from the French side, they were made to work for their fruit as they registered themselves in the final four. Scoring two goals in two minutes, the home team lit up Villa Park for the final half-hour.

Aston Villa managed to create five big chances in the second half as a few went begging. Managing 17 shots despite 34% possession, Villa put up a brilliant counter-attacking display. Unai Emery’s side will leave the pitch their heads high as their European campaign comes to an end.

Manager Emery in his post-match reaction expressed his desire to take Aston Villa to greater levels. Reflecting on the campaign, the Spanish manager said:

“Being proud of everything we did, how we played in the Champions League. I’m going to demand better from the club and the players to even get better. We finished in the quarterfinals and hopefully, we can come back here quickly”

“I’m proud of the team and, at the same time, I’m ambitious in the sense of being demanding… We competed well, but we have to make it natural to face teams like PSG.”

Marcus Rashford who had an impactful outing against PSG received a standing ovation for his substitution. The loan star from Manchester United had an exciting outing as he created the most big chances on the pitch.

On being asked if Villa will exercise the £40 million clause and secure the Englishman’s future at the Park, Emery said:

“It is difficult to plan it now. It depends on the circumstances and what happens in the next weeks. He’s feeling comfortable and feeling better. He played a fantastic match against PSG. We are very happy”

Aston Villa will now be quick to shift their focus on the Premier League as they stand seventh on the table. Trailing by two points to fourth-placed Newcastle, Emery’s side will be taking on the Magpies and Manchester City in their next two fixtures.

Taking a positive result from these games will be termed important for Emery’s side if they are redeeming their chances of European qualifications next year. Aston Villa will also have their FA Cup semifinals against Crystal Palace as the competition could also serve as a ticket to the Champions League next year.
