Sabalenka continues her quest for a first final at Wimbledon
After shocking first-round exits of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, day 3 brings action from the second round at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
World number 1, Aryna Sabalenka, gets things started on Centre Court today with her second-round match against Marie Bouzkova, as she aims to reach her first-ever final at the year’s third Grand Slam.
The number one seed, Sabalenka, has been in tremendous form this year. Despite just the three titles to show for, she has made deep runs in many tournaments, including a recent loss in the final of Roland Garros.
Having said that, grass courts have proven to be the toughest surface for her, where she currently holds a 30-18 win-loss record. Wimbledon is also the only major where she is yet to make the final, with her best finish being the semis in 2021 and 2023.
The Belarusian looked quite comfortable in her first-round win over Carson Branstine, especially at the net, winning 11 of 13 points. She also broke her opponent thrice in just 5 attempts while allowing only one break point opportunity to Branstine.

At the other end of the net, Bouzkova has fared worse on grass, where she currently holds a 12-13 record. Her best result at Wimbledon came in 2022 when she reached the quarters. Overall, she hasn’t had the best of seasons this year with a win-loss record of just 15-13.
The Czech player overcame Lulu Sun in the first round with a convincing straight-sets win. Her game was based more on maintaining consistency rather than an aggressive approach, as she hit just 16 winners but had only 11 unforced errors.
Sabalenka and Bouzkova will be playing for the fourth time today. Presently, the world number 1 holds a slight 2-1 lead in their head-to-head. The pair have never met on grass before, as all three matches have been contested on hard courts.

Bouzkova’s game is based more on consistency, strong court coverage, and a good baseline game. She is pretty good at returning the ball even against the best servers; however, Sabalenka’s power game could be too much to handle.
With 171 aces this year and 76% service games won, along with break point conversion and return games won, both above 40%, Sabalenka will prove a tough opponent to overcome today.

The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
