Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has publicly apologized following his red card incident during the Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona on Saturday. The German center-back was dismissed late in extra time after he tried to throw an ice pack at referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea in a moment of fury.

The pre-match events and the match itself was dramatic enough. However, it didn’t end there as tension boiled over after Barcelona’s Jules Kounde scored the decisive goal in the 116th minute. Moments later, a foul was called against Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe.

This denied Los Blancos a potential equalizing opportunity. This decision sparked chaos on the Madrid bench. Rudiger, who had been substituted earlier due to an injury, reacted very angrily. He hurled water bottles and tried to throw an ice pack from the technical area. He had to be restrained by teammates.

Even the coaching staff had to intervene to prevent further escalation. Reportedly, Referee De Burgos noted in his post-match report that Rudiger was sent off “for throwing an object from the technical area, without it reaching me.” He also mentioned Rudiger needing to be “restrained by various members of the coaching staff, showing an aggressive attitude.”

The German defender took to social media the following day to express remorse. He wrote in a social media post:

“There’s definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I’m very sorry for that. We played a very good game from the second half on – After 111 minutes I was not able to help my team anymore and before the final whistle I did a mistake. Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I have disappointed last night.”

Potential Consequences Loom for Rudiger

Rudiger now faces the prospect of a lengthy suspension. As per the Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Code, he could face a ban ranging between four and twelve matches under Article 101. This article addresses mild violence toward referees and this act is considered serious.

Hence, the ban would apply across all domestic competitions, including La Liga. His teammates Jude Bellingham and Lucas Vazquez also saw red cards after the final whistle for unsportsmanlike conduct. They are also expected to face sanctions but lighter ones. They would probably have to serve one-match suspensions.

The Copa del Rey final was already played under an atmosphere of controversy. Real Madrid had previously accused the match officials of “animosity and hostility.” They even boycotted pre-match formalities and threatened boycotting the match. The heated environment eventually culminated in the dramatic scenes that ultimately overshadowed the club’s 3-2 loss.
