Ansu Fati Set to Join AS Monaco as Barcelona Clears Room for Transfers

The 22-Year-Old Seeks a Fresh Start in Ligue 1 After a Difficult Spell in Spain.

Ansu Fati is officially set to join AS Monaco on a season-long loan. According to multiple reports, both Monaco and Barcelona have reached a full agreement this week. The 22-year-old Barcelona forward was once touted as the heir to Lionel Messi’s No. 10 shirt. He will travel to Monaco on Friday for medicals.

He could start training under Adi Hutter as early as Saturday. Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed the move, stating, “If everything ends well, we could have good news this week and he’ll go to Monaco.” The deal includes a contract extension with Barcelona until June 2028. It will also see Monaco covering 50% of Fati’s salary.

A Career in Need of Revival

Fati’s journey has been derailed by recurring injuries since bursting onto the scene as a teenager. This is not his first loan spell. He had a mixed one at Brighton, where he scored four goals in 27 appearances. He then returned to Barça but failed to impress under coach Hansi Flick.

During the 2024–25 season, Fati made just 11 appearances. He failed to score in any competition, totaling only 135 minutes of play. His lack of involvement has culminated in the club reassigning his iconic No. 10 shirt to the rising star Lamine Yamal.

The move to Monaco is seen as a necessary step for both Fati and the Catalan giants. Especially considering Barcelona are working to balance the books amid Financial Fair Play scrutiny. They will need to solve it before they try to bring in Nico Williams from Athletic Club.

Deal Structure: Loan with Future Options

Renowned journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Fati’s move includes a buy option worth approximately €11 million ($12.7 million). It’s still unclear whether Barcelona have inserted a buy-back clause.

The club has frequently used this strategy in the past with young talents to maintain long-term control. From Monaco’s perspective, this is a low-risk, high-reward opportunity. The Ligue 1 club are also close to signing Paul Pogba.

They believe they can restore Fati’s confidence and rediscover the talent that once made him one of football’s brightest prospects. The move also benefits Barcelona financially. Fati was among the top earners at the club, and his departure certainly frees up space.
