Andrey Rublev kicks off his French Open against Lloyd Harris
Andrey Rublev gets his 2025 French Open campaign underway today with a first-round match against Lloyd Harris. The two players are set to face off for the third time on tour, but on paper, this is a complete mismatch in favor of the Russian.
Harris has come through to the main draw on the back of three qualifying round wins, including a three-set win over former US Open Champion Marin Cilic. Despite the momentum from the qualifiers, Harris will have his work cut out for him in this first-round match.
Rublev showed promise early in the season when he had a semi-final run at Open Occitanie in France, followed by a quarter-final at the ATP Rotterdam, before winning a title at the Qatar Open against Jack Draper in the final.
However, since then, the Russian suffered several early exits and was having a poor clay season until reaching the final at the Hamburg Open just last week. Rublev’s best performance at the French Open remains his quarter-final runs in 2020 and 2022.
On the other side of the net is South African Lloyd Harris, who has only featured in challenger-level tournaments, while failing to clear the qualifying rounds at other tournaments. Harris has managed to get as far as the second round at Roland Garros, and if his opponent is on his game today, it could be another early exit at the year’s second major.

Rublev and Harris have played each other twice before, and the Russian holds a 2-0 lead. There is little to suggest that Harris can turn the tide in today’s match, but anything can happen on court.
The pair first played each other at Adelaide in 2020, with Rublev securing a straight-sets win. They faced off once again at Wimbledon in 2021, where the outcome remained the same: a straight-sets win for the Russian.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | Wimbledon | Round of 64 | Andrey Rublev | 6-1, 6-2, 7-5 |
| 2020 | Adelaide | Final | Andrey Rublev | 6-3, 6-0 |
The two players are poles apart when it comes to their careers on tour. The Russian has 17 career titles and has been ranked as high as number 5 in the world.
Harris, who is currently ranked well outside of the top 200, reached as high as number 31 in 2021, but the South African has no titles at the highest level.
| Andrey Rublev | Category | Lloyd Harris |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | Ranking | 227 |
| 350-196 | Career W-L | 77-83 |
| 15-12 | YTD W-L | 0-0 |
| 17 | Career Titles | 0 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 1 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Judging by the pair’s previous head-to-head history, current form, and overall ability, today’s match should be a routine win for Rublev. Harris just doesn’t have the game to trouble the Russian, who should march into the second round with ease.
So far on clay this year, Rublev has won 76% of his service games, saving 60% of the break points he has faced and converted on 41% of his break point chances. It would be rather difficult for Harris to overcome such numbers on what is considered to be Rublev’s preferred surface
