The turbulent career of not-so-fan-favourite Andre Onana, took another difficult turn this week. The former Manchester United goalkeeper endured a nightmare outing with Cameroon during their World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde. His performance drew heavy criticism, but it was his furious reaction towards a fan afterward that stole headlines.
The 29-year-old is set to leave Old Trafford for a loan move to Turkish club Trabzonspor. However, his international duty only deepened the concerns surrounding his form and temperament. He was once regarded among Europe’s most reliable shot-stoppers. Yet, now, the player finds himself struggling both on and off the pitch.

Cameroon’s clash with Cape Verde was billed as a top-of-the-table battle. Yet, Onana’s mistake in the 53rd minute proved decisive. Forward Rocha Livramento broke through the defence and, left one-on-one, Onana stayed rooted to his line before diving the wrong way. That was the single goal of the match. It handed Cape Verde a famous 1-0 win.
They’re now four points clear at the top of the group. The defeat left Cameroon in second place with two games to play. They’re facing the prospect of a play-off for World Cup qualification. For Onana, it was another costly blunder in a growing catalogue of errors. It seems, they have unfortunately defined his spell in England and beyond.

Tensions boiled over after the final whistle. As Onana left the pitch at the National Stadium, jubilant Cape Verde supporters invaded the field. One fan approached him, apparently attempting to record a video or take a selfie.
Onana, visibly angry, shoved the supporter away. Soon he became the target of a thrown bottle as he made his exit. Footage of the incident quickly spread on social media. A source close to the player told The Sun that his actions were motivated by concerns for his safety.

Onana’s Old Trafford career appears all but over. Manchester United will not receive a loan fee for his temporary move to Trabzonspor, nor will there be an obligation to buy. United legend Rio Ferdinand described the decision to move Onana on as a positive step.
He said that the club can no longer “have players that either aren’t good enough, haven’t performed well enough or are not the right people.” With his United future uncertain and his international reputation taking a hit, Onana now faces a new challenge of rebuilding his career in Turkey.
