Krejcikova set to begin her title defense against upcoming Eala
Proceedings for day 2 at the Wimbledon Championships on Centre Court will commence with Alexandra Eala taking on the number 17 seed and the defending Champion Barbora Krejcikova.
This is a tough opening round fixture for both players and should be a closely contested match. The winner of this match proceeds to the second round to go up against either Carolinne Dolehide or Arantxa Rus.
Alexandra Eala is having a breakout season this year with multiple deep runs in tournaments. She started the year strong, making the semi-final runs at the Canberra International and the Miami Open, and has recently come off an appearance in the final of the Eastbourne Open.
Leading up to Wimbledon, the Filipino has entered four grass-court tournaments, which would have provided her plenty of experience adapting to the surface. Despite having a decent year, the youngster has struggled to hold serve, managing to do so just under 60% of the time. But she has converted 52.5% of her break points and won 46.5% of her return games.

On the other hand, Krejcikova has struggled massively this year, mainly due to injuries. She holds a 3-3 record on the year and lacks big-match practice. She played at Queens and at Eastbourne prior to Wimbledon, but could not progress far in either of the tournaments. Krejcikova has won 63.8% of her service games and converted 52.8% of her break points.
Today’s meeting in the first round of Wimbledon will be the pair’s first meeting on tour. It will be interesting to see how the younger Eala adapts her game against the veteran player, who is also the defending Champion.
| Alexandra Eala | Category | Barbora Krejcikova |
|---|---|---|
| 56 | Ranking | 16 |
| 180-107 | Career W-L | 395-226 |
| 26-16 | YTD W-L | 3-3 |
| 0 | Career Titles | 8 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 2 |
| 0 | YTD Titles | 0 |
The Filipino is currently enjoying a good run of form, and after participating in as many as 4 events on grass, with an excellent run to the final in Eastbourne, Eala should come into this match with plenty of confidence. That said, she is up against a tough veteran who is a two-time major winner.

Krejcikova’s struggles with injury have limited her appearances this year, and she is still finding her way back into the mix of things. But she is the defending champion, and that should account for something. This is a tough one to call, but based purely on current form, Eala should come through in three sets.
