Alexander Zverev’s Ignorance of Crucial Carlos Alcaraz Advice May Have Proved Costly for Team Europe at Laver Cup 2025

Despite their best efforts to stage an otherworldly recovery, Team Europe failed to defend their title at the 2025 Laver Cup. With new captain Yannick Noah at the helm and World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz headlining the player list, the men in blue were the favorites ahead of the event. However, Taylor Fritz constructed two near-perfect performances across two days to complete the grand success for Team World. With the likes of Alex de Minaur, Francisco Cerundolo and Joao Fonseca also making healthy contributions, Andre Agassi and co. reigned supreme in San Francisco.

Coming into Match-12, Team World held a narrow advantage of 12-9 in the tie. A win for Zverev would earn his team three points, and send the 2025 Laver Cup into a deciding doubles contest. However, it was the American who was on the attack early on. The opening set was dominated by long, grueling exchanges – Fritz was on the front foot more often than not. Although the World No. 3 was landing more first serves in, he could not win free points due to the lack of pace and direction.

Taylor Fritz won 80% points on first serve throughout the encounter. One of the big reasons for his success was his willingness to have an attacking strike point and come to the net whenever there was half a chance. On the contrary, Zverev seemed to be stuck in a deep court position and did not play brave tennis. In the end, he had nothing left in the tank – Fritz managed to win a captivating second set tiebreaker to emerge victorious 6-3 7-6(4).

Zverev Seemingly Overlooks Carlos Alcaraz’s Words of Wisdom Before Going Down

Throughout the match, Zverev appeared to alter his return position to counter Fritz’s powerful serve. Unfortunately, he managed to generate only three break points during the course of the match – converting just one of them. Up 6-5 in the second set, Carlos Alcaraz appeared to dish out some advice to his German teammate at the changeover. However, what ensued looked like Zverev ignoring the words of wisdom, and asking for Casper Ruud’s thoughts instead.

“Put pressure on him, let him play. Let’s fight, let’s work the point at the beginning – two or three shots – and then go for it,” encouraged the six-time Grand Slam champion. Just as he was rounding it up, however, World No. 3 Zverev wanted another opinion. “Hey, Casper [Ruud]? Second serve return position – what do you think? For you.” Although Ruud suggested that Zverev go for the kill and attack, he ended up losing the game as well as the tiebreaker that followed.
