After a worrisome first half of the season, Daniil Medvedev silenced his critics with a heroic effort at the Almaty Open. The Russian will be playing his fifth quarterfinal since Flushing Meadows on Friday, and 25th Masters-1000 quarterfinal overall. Currently ranked No. 13 in the world, he is fighting for the last spot in the Nitto ATP Finals. Apart from his solitary championship run, Medvedev also finished as the runner-up in Halle and semifinalist in four other events. The 29-year-old has a success rate of 65% on tour in 2025.

Whenever these two players come face to face, there is always a carnival of groundstrokes. Over the years, Zverev has struggled to land a knockout blow against his Russian counterpart. While the German has arguably been the better of the two at constructing points, Medvedev’s relentless counterpunch prowess and fighting mentality has given him the edge. One can expect plenty of tense baseline exchanges, and a three set battle where patience will prevail.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev in three sets.
