Davidovich Fokina has won the last two matches against the Dutchman
Continuing with the day 3 matches at Wimbledon today, we have the number 26 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina going up against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp. Today’s clash will be the pair’s fifth career meeting.
After a record-breaking 13 seeds fell in the first round this year from the men’s draw, it will be interesting to see if Davidovich Fokina can prevent an upset in round two.
Prior to entering Wimbledon, Davidovich Fokina participated in the Eastbourne Open, where he made a strong run to the semi-final. He is 4-1 on grass this year, but overall in his career, he has a 10-11 win-loss record on this surface.
That said, he breezed through his first-round matchup against Brandon Holt with a straight-sets win. The Spanish player executed well on his serve, winning 80% of his points on first serve and 82% of the points at the net. He also broke his opponent 5 times in just 9 attempts.
14 – Since the start of the 2020 season, only Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (15) has played more five-setters in the opening week at Grand Slam events than Taylor Fritz (14). Delayed.#Wimbledon | @Wimbledon @atptour @ATPMediaInfo pic.twitter.com/E8g2mHBji6

On the other side is Van de Zandschulp, who has struggled for most of the year. His service hasn’t been that great, with just 61 aces and 70 double faults throughout the year. He has managed to save just 50% of the break points faced.
The positive for him will be his first-round win over Matteo Arnaldi, in which he came through in straight sets. He was able to serve well and also won crucial points at the net. Despite facing 6 break points, the Dutchman allowed Arnaldi to convert only once.
The pair have faced each other four times in the past, with Davidovich Fokina holding a 3-1 lead in their head-to-head matchup. Interestingly, the duo’s last match came exactly two years ago at the round of 64 in Wimbledon, which went the Spaniard’s way.

Davidovich Fokina is expected to come through in this match, especially based on his far superior consistency this year. Van de Zandschulp has really struggled to put together a good season, but he will take heart from his straight-sets win over Arnaldi.
The Dutchman will have to produce another high-quality match with good serving and net skills, but even then, it is difficult to see him trouble the Spaniard over a 5 set match.
