Aaron Boone has never been shy about standing up for his players, and on Sunday, 22 games into the season, the Yankees manager finally has his first ejection of the season.

Aaron Boone was ejected in the eighth inning of the Yankees’ series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays after rushing onto the field to defend Aaron Judge, who had just struck out on a pitch that had a 66.2% called strike probability, according to TruMedia’s calculations. The moment capped a frustrating sequence that saw Judge lose a potential home run earlier in the at-bat and then get rung up looking on a borderline call. Before Judge could dig in too deep with home plate umpire Adam Beck, Boone made sure he took the heat instead.

New Ejection Milestone for Aaron Boone

In the process, Boone reached a notable milestone: his 40th career ejection as a manager. It was his first of the season, but it moves him into a tie for 38th on the all-time managerial ejections list, alongside Casey Stengel and Terry Collins, per Baseball Reference. Boone already holds the Yankees franchise record for most managerial ejections, having passed Joe Girardi’s mark of 34 last year. He’s also widened that lead; no other Yankees manager is even within ten ejections of him.

Boone has reached this number in just his seventh season at the helm. By comparison, Girardi was tossed 34 times across a full decade in pinstripes. And while Boone likely won’t touch Bobby Cox’s towering total of 162, his current pace puts him within reach of the top 20 all-time. Just 15 more and he’ll be among some of the game’s most legendary hotheads.

Sunday’s outburst was triggered by a rollercoaster at-bat for Judge. Third base umpire Scott Barry had initially ruled what appeared to be a home run as a foul ball. Moments later, Beck called a third strike on the outer edge, freezing Judge and sparking instant protest. Boone wasted no time storming out of the dugout, first barking at Beck, then turning his frustration toward Barry.

He got his money’s worth before Beck sent him to the showers. Luckily for the Yankees, that call didn’t end up hurting them as they took the game, and the series 3-1 in Tampa.
