How did Nick Chubb get injured?

The injury took place in the third quarter when Chubb, 28, appeared to take a heavy step on his left foot during a play fake. While quarterback Jameis Winston held onto the ball, Chubb ran toward the line and pulled up suddenly, visibly favoring his left foot. Initially listed as questionable, Chubb was officially ruled out after medical evaluation.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski explained in the post-game press conference that the injury likely occurred when Chubb’s foot was stepped on. He also expressed his admiration for Chubb’s perseverance, saying:

“I can’t tell you how much I respect him as a person. Really, really disappointed about this injury. (But it) does not change the fact that he continues to inspire this football team with how he approaches every single day. And I know that this is just another obstacle that he will overcome.”

The Browns lost the game 21-7 to the Chiefs.

How long will Nick Chubb be out?

The broken foot means Chubb’s 2024 season is over, with three games still left on the schedule. The RB also took a pay cut to return for the season. Chubb will hit NFL free agency in March, and the timing of his injury, and his contract being in the final year doesn’t help but raise questions about his future in the franchise.

Nick Chubb’s Cleveland legacy

If Chubb’s time in Cleveland is indeed up, he leaves behind quite a remarkable legacy. He ranks third in franchise history in both rushing yards (6,802) and rushing touchdowns (51), trailing only Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly.

Chubb’s efficiency has also been remarkable. Before this season, his career average of 5.3 yards per carry ranked as the third-highest in the Super Bowl era for a running back. From 2019 to 2022, Chubb has crossed the 1,000-yard rushing mark.

With Chubb sidelined, the Browns will look to Jerome Ford to step up as their primary ball-carrier. Meanwhile, third-string back Pierre Strong Jr. is expected to see more touches as Cleveland adjusts its offensive strategy.
