Vikings to start new season without key player on offense
The Minnesota Vikings are set to start their 2025 season on the back foot as the NFL has handed a 3-game ban to one of their starting wide receivers. On Tuesday, news broke out that the league has decided to ban Vikings WR2 Jordan Addison for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
The 23-year-old will be entering his third season in the league after being drafted by Minnesota in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft. Establishing himself as the number 2 pass-catching option behind Justin Jefferson, Addison’s suspension will be a tough pill to swallow for the Vikings.

Addison’s suspension comes after he pleaded no-contest on July 17 to a lesser offense as a means to settle a DUI-related incident that took place in July 2024.
Addison negotiated a plea deal for wet reckless driving on a highway, which also led to him being suspended by the league, as it involves the consumption of alcohol while driving, going against the NFL policy.
In reality, in July 2024, Addison was found asleep behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce, which was blocking a lane near the Los Angeles International Airport. As a result of this, the former USC Trojan receiver was subject to a fine of $390 and a 12-month probation period.

With Addison now handed a 3-game suspension, the Vikings will have to make do without him for their season opener against the Bears, followed by the Falcons and Bengals in weeks 2 and 3, respectively. He should be able to make his return for the week 4 clash against the Steelers.
The suspension does not limit him from any training camp activities or participating in the preseason games, which is a positive, but the more important question on hand is how Minnesota will proceed without him in the lineup.
The Vikings have yet to release an unofficial preseason depth chart, so at the moment, it is difficult to tell which receivers could take his place. However, Jalen Nailor will potentially see many more snaps in Addison’s absence as the 4th-year veteran saw increased production last season as well.
Jordan Addison might be the most underrated WR in the NFL

Additionally, other receivers who could be called upon include Rondale Moore, Tai Felton, and Lucky Jackson in case Minnesota doesn’t add another wideout to its roster.
Addison’s suspension could leave the team handicapped, and if they fall to a losing record early on, it may be difficult for them to catch up, especially with J.J. McCarthy getting ready to play his first snaps in the NFL and the fact that they play in the very competitive NFC North division.

nfl I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
