James Cook Contract Extension Still on Hold As Bills Running Back Misses Practice for Consecutive Days!

Rudra Dubey

Pro Bowl RB skips practice despite presence at Bills camp. Cook seeks long-term deal.

As the Buffalo Bills ramp up training camp with championship expectations, they’re already facing a disruption. Pro Bowl running back James Cook has begun a “hold-in,” choosing to stay off the practice field while negotiations over a new contract stall. Let’s find out the whole drill of the contract stalemate, which is now public.

For the record, James Cook was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the second round (63rd overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. According to Spotrac, his rookie contract was a four-year deal worth $5.83 million, including $2.39 million in guaranteed money and an average annual salary of $1.45 million.

Star RB’s Silent Stand Raises Stakes in Buffalo

Cook isn’t skipping camp entirely. He’s present, attending meetings, and around teammates, but he’s not strapping on pads. It’s a calculated move by the 25-year-old back who’s fresh off a career year with 1,009 rushing yards, 18 total touchdowns, and a second consecutive Pro Bowl selection.

While Cook avoids fines by showing up, the absence of him on the field is hard to ignore. And the front office has taken notice. “Yeah, you know, it’s not something we were fully aware of until shortly before practice,” GM Brandon Beane admitted. “So, I get it, I understand it. It’s the world we’re in, I guess, of how players want to respond and things like that.”

Beane emphasized that communication with Cook’s representatives is ongoing but didn’t hide his disappointment. “So, you know, at the end of the day, I wish we weren’t here,” he said. “This is my ninth season here, we’ve never had a player miss due to a contract or anything like that, so that’s disappointing for me.

Cook’s frustration isn’t unique. Running backs around the NFL have struggled to secure long-term, lucrative deals, despite production. Even top-tier backs like Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley have faced contract roadblocks. It’s a trend that makes Cook’s stance part of a larger conversation about how the league values the position.

The Bills have yet to add a name at running back this offseason. Ty Johnson and second-year back Ray Davis are on the depth chart, but neither offers the same explosiveness or red-zone punch that Cook brings. And with Josh Allen coming off an MVP season, Buffalo can’t afford to lose balance in its offense.

Cook’s hold-in is a calculated risk, but one he likely sees as necessary. Whether the Bills meet him at the negotiating table or test life without him could be a defining factor in their pursuit of a long-awaited Super Bowl.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
