The rumours of a Connecticut Sun sale are moving swiftly as multiple players have joined in to buy the franchise from the Mohegan Tribe. Boston Celtics’ minority owner Steve Pagliuca led group, registered one of the earliest interests in the acquisition.

Pagliuca remains keen on relocating the franchise after the sale receives formal league approval. He revealed his plans to take the franchise to Boston and also pour close to $100 million to build a new training facility for the players.

Steve Pagliuca said, “Central to our proposal is enabling the Sun to play in larger capacity arenas in New England. We believe our record-setting offer and deep commitment to growing the WNBA in the region that is home to the most passionate basketball fans in the nation will significantly benefit the league, the team, and all its fans.”

Pagliuca led group has already tabled a record $325 million to the Mohegan Tribe. However, approval of both sale and potential relocation ultimately rests in the hands of the WNBA. And the league hasn’t shown interest in green lighting a relocation from Connecticut to Boston.

Reports claim the WNBA has plans to include Boston in its 2033 expansion policy rollout. They are more interested in keeping Connecticut as a team. Portland, Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia are some of the teams that are expected to join the league over the next five years.

Pagliuca Faces Roadblocks In WNBA Bid

The problems for Steve Pagliuca don’t only end here as he also has a major competition coming in. Former Milwaukee Bucks’ owner Marc Lasry is leading an investment group to rival Pagliuca’s attempts of buying Connecticut Sun.

Marc Lasry has also tabled an equally appealing offer to the Mohegan Tribe. He wants to retain the franchise in Connecticut rather than relocating it somewhere else. This local retention plan reportedly aligns better with the league’s vision, though final decisions remain pending with the Tribe.
