Chiefs Agree 4-Year Contract Extension With Defensive End George Karlaftis – Is He Ready To Emerge From Chris Jones’ Shadow?

Just days before the start of training camp, the Kansas City Chiefs quietly secured the services of defensive end George Karlaftis for an additional four years. Kansas City and Karlaftis agreed on a new contract extension worth $93 million over the next four years, which includes a $62 million guarantee. The 2022 first-round pick will earn around $23.25 million per year.

Over the past three seasons, Karlaftis has been one of the more consistent defensive linemen on this dominant Chiefs’ team. Working well in tandem with the franchise’s star defensive tackle, Chris Jones, the duo has managed to raise the Chiefs’ defense to a whole new level.

George Karlaftis Contract Details

Karlaftis will be heading into his fourth year, and the Chiefs had already picked up his fifth-year option that was worth around $15 million. Now, the new six-year contract for the defensive end will see him earn $105.528 million, which comes out to around $17.588 million from signing.

The new money over four years works out to $88 million, which is an average of $22 million. Moreover, Karlaftis’ contract also includes annual incentives up to $1.25 million each year from 2027 to 2030, following which he will become a free agent.

The 24-year-old’s latest extension now puts him at number ten on the list of highest-paid defensive ends in the league. He is quite a way behind the top of the bunch led by T.J. Watt, who sits on $41 million per year, but even then, Karlaftis has earned himself a handsome deal.

Can Karlaftis Be More Effective Heading Into Year 4?

Over the past couple of seasons, the Chiefs’ defense has taken big strides and now prides itself as a unit capable of winning games for the team even if the offense is struggling. In fact, ever since the departure of Tyreek Hill from Kansas City, it is the defense that has stepped up under the guidance and training of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

The main threat for the opposition during this period has been defensive tackle Chris Jones, a former second-round pick who is now arguably the best in his position. Players such as Karlaftis have been said to benefit from having Jones alongside them, as he is the one drawing all the attention.

As a result, Karlaftis has managed 24.5 sacks in three seasons in the league, and he has been an excellent Robin to Jones’ Batman. But, for now, the narrative of the story is driven by Jones.

With this early contract extension, the Chiefs have placed quite a lot of trust in their man. The question is, will he rise to the occasion, and can he develop further to form a potent 1-2 punch on Kansas City’s defensive line?
