Barcelona Closer to Camp Nou Return as Joan Gamper Trophy Plans Progress

Barcelona have taken a significant step forward in their efforts to bring the Joan Gamper Trophy back to Camp Nou, potentially marking their return to the iconic stadium on August 10 after more than a year of renovation work.

Key Licence Secured Ahead of Stadium Test Event

The Catalan club has been granted the first of two critical licenses needed to host the traditional season-opening fixture at their home ground. This initial approval allows for construction and activity to continue ahead of the proposed date. However, the second licence—officially termed the ‘first entrance’ permit—remains pending. It will only be issued once all structural and safety-related elements required for the match are completed.

In the meantime, Barcelona are preparing to host a behind-closed-doors test event on July 28 to verify the stadium’s readiness. If successful, this will pave the way for a safe and official return to Camp Nou for the Gamper Trophy clash, expected to be against Serie A newcomers Como.

The Joan Gamper Trophy traditionally serves as a pre-season curtain-raiser and a showcase for new signings, but this year, it carries even more significance. Hosting the game at Camp Nou could have far-reaching financial implications, particularly in relation to the club’s salary limit. Increased matchday revenue from a potential 60,000 spectators—though that number may be reduced due to construction concerns—could improve the club’s spending power under La Liga’s financial regulations.

The club had initially set high hopes for a large attendance, but ongoing concerns over construction delays might lead to a more conservative capacity estimate for the event.

If all permits are secured and the test event goes as planned, Barcelona could officially return to their spiritual home for the first time since the Espai Barça redevelopment project began—marking a major milestone in both infrastructure and sporting operations.
