Nikolaj Ehlers signs 6-year, $51 million deal with the Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes just signed one of the top available free agents on the market, Nikolaj Ehlers, on Thursday. The signing was made official after several days of speculation, as Ehlers hadn’t decided on where he wanted to play next.
Apart from the Canes, there was reportedly interest from other franchises such as the Washington Capitals and the Colorado Avalanche. However, the Canes were probably always the favorite to sign Ehlers, given that it made the most sense for the Danish player with respect to chasing a Stanley Cup.
WORTH THE WAIT 🙌

After Mitch Marner signed with the Vegas Golden Knights, Ehlers was the next best free agent on the market, and the Canes’ GM Eric Tulsky recognized what this signing could do for the team.
“Nikolaj was the top free agent available on July 1, and we are proud that he’s chosen to make Carolina his home. He’s a highly skilled winger who can really skate and will fit very well with our forward group.”
The former Winnipeg Jets winger will officially play for the Hurricanes from next season after signing a massive 6-year contract worth $51 million. The contract is fully guaranteed, and he is set to receive $8.5 million in AAV for the next 6 years.
The 29-year-old will now be under contract till the end of the 2030-31 season, following which he will become an unrestricted free agent. This deal has made him one of the highest-paid players signed this offseason.

Ehlers’ versatility will play a role for the Canes, who can employ him on either of their top 2 lines. The Danish player brings about a strong work ethic, physical approach, and excellent playmaking skills.
Hurricanes’ coach Rod Brind’Amour likes to see high compete levels from his players. He employs a high-tempo offense, heavy on the forecheck, where they have possession of the puck more so in the offensive zone. Although Ehlers may not be exceptional on the forecheck, he is a great in-zone player to have on the roster.
Raise up, @Canes fans!

The former Jet is coming off a good 2024 season in which she accumulated 63 points from 69 games, including 24 goals. Having previously played for the Jets all 10 years, Ehlers managed to score 20-plus goals in all but two seasons.
Carolina has taken the ‘all-in’ approach seriously and looks like a team worthy of battling for the Stanley Cup in the upcoming seasons. Their latest signings and activity have no doubt strengthened their roster; the only question is whether it will be enough.
