Bernardo Silva Admits Club World Cup Exit Feels Like Champions League Heartbreak

Manchester City’s shock exit from the FIFA Club World Cup has left captain Bernardo Silva admitting the defeat cuts just as deep as a Champions League elimination. The Premier League champions were dumped out in dramatic fashion by Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, losing 4-3 in extra time in a pulsating round-of-16 encounter in Orlando.

City entered the tournament as strong favourites after comfortably winning all three of their group stage matches. But despite taking an early lead through Silva and later forcing extra time via goals from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, the English giants fell victim to Al-Hilal’s relentless counter-attacking display and clinical finishing.

Marcos Leonardo and Malcom were instrumental in the Saudi side’s resurgence, with Kalidou Koulibaly heading them back into the lead during extra time. Leonardo sealed the victory in the 112th minute, delivering a statement win for Saudi football and a bitter blow to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Bernardo Silva acknowledged the flaws of Manchester

Silva acknowledged City’s vulnerability on transitions and admitted they struggled to contain Al-Hilal’s attacking momentum. While the Premier League champions created enough chances to win the game, they were ultimately punished for their defensive lapses and failure to capitalise on their opportunities.

The Portuguese midfielder, who also scored City’s opening goal, recognised the individual quality in the Al-Hilal squad, including former Wolves star Ruben Neves and ex-City full-back Joao Cancelo, both of whom played key roles against their former teammate.

City’s early exit means their campaign will now conclude more than a month earlier than expected. A run to the final would have taken them to mid-July, leaving just five weeks before the Premier League season opener on August 16. While some observers suggest the extra rest could benefit City after an inconsistent 2024/25 season, Silva dismissed that idea, underlining that the squad had real ambitions to win the Club World Cup.

As City return home, the disappointment is undeniable. For Silva and his teammates, the early elimination stings every bit as much as falling short on Europe’s biggest stage.
