Why Olympique Lyon Will Face Relegation Despite PSG’s Help?

Lyon’s Relegation Despite PSG’s Financial Assistance

Olympique Lyonnais, one of France’s most storied football clubs, found itself in a dire financial situation leading up to the 2024-2025 season. The club’s troubles began to escalate in 2024 when their debts increased by approximately €50 million.

Facing relegation, PSG made a decision to make an early payment for Bradley Barcola, signed for €45+5 million in 2023, was a strategic move to bolster Lyon’s finances ahead of the DNCG review. However, the reinstated appeal has come back with disappointment despite PSG’s help.

Why the Relegation Despite PSG’s Help?

Although the early payment for Barcola enhanced Lyon’s immediate cash flow, it failed to address the underlying debt structure or provide a long-term financial strategy, which is a requirement of the DNCG. Making the decision rigorously, Lyon’s overall debt and lack of a clear path outweighed the positive impact of the Barcola payment.

Lyon’s relegation is a humble reminder of the financial challenges facing many European clubs. Those with ambitious owners but limited revenue streams could find themselves in a tough spot. Football clubs can face relegation due to financial mismanagement or insolvency.

It is often as a result of failing to meet financial regulations set by governing bodies as the club is dropped from the division. Lyon will join Girondins de Bordeaux who were relegated from Ligue 1 in 2024 for the same reasons.

While it is a nightmare for the fans and the city, it highlights the importance of the club’s financial mismanagement in the uppermost leagues. The sale of key players like Rayan Cherki to Manchester City for €42.5 million in 2025 provided some relief, but it was not enough to stabilise their finances.

Lyon Owner and American businessman John Textor, has been subject to scrutiny regarding the club’s financial well-being. Textor’s inability to provide a clear plan to reduce the debt has led to further complications have made fans doubt his leadership as they will compete in Ligue 2 in the 2025/26 season.
