He studied at Preston High School, Southwest Academy Prep, and The Phelps School. By the time he reached his final two years of high school, Riley was already ranked no. 9 overall by 247Sports. During his high school career, Riley averaged 21.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, further solidifying his reputation as a complete scorer.
Riley committed to the University of Illinois, becoming their highest ranked recruit in program history, surpassing even Dee Brown (2002). In his freshman season, the forward played 35 games and registered an average of 12.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.
