Key injuries and returning starters could shape the Lions vs. Vikings battle at Ford Field
The Detroit Lions (5-2) return from their Week 8 bye to host the Minnesota Vikings (3-4) at Ford Field on Sunday, November 2. The last time these two teams met, Detroit dominated a Sam Darnold-led Minnesota side 31-9 in the 2024 regular-season finale, securing the NFC’s top playoff seed. Both clubs, however, stumbled in the postseason, with the Lions falling 45-31 to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round, while the Vikings bowed out 27-9 to the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card.

Heading into Week 9, the Lions remain the class of the NFC North, aiming for a third straight division crown. The Vikings, meanwhile, are trending in the opposite direction. Back-to-back losses to the Chargers and Eagles have exposed instability on both sides of the ball, and a quarterback change only adds to the uncertainty.
When these two last battled, the division title and NFC’s top seed were on the line. Detroit rose to the occasion, while Minnesota looked overmatched, a theme that could continue this week. Rookie J.J. McCarthy returns under center after missing time since Week 2’s loss to Atlanta due to a high ankle sprain. In his absence Carson Wentz led.

The Vikings opened Week 9 practice with several key names on the injury list. Fullback C.J. Ham (hand), cornerback Jeff Okudah (concussion), and tight end Josh Oliver (foot) all sat out Wednesday’s session. Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard (ankle), tackle Brian O’Neill (knee), and cornerback Isaiah Rodgers (shoulder) were limited participants, while tackle Christian Darrisaw (knee), quarterback J.J. McCarthy (ankle), and linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel (neck) were full participants. The return of McCarthy is a notable boost as Minnesota looks to steady its offense after consecutive losses.

Detroit’s midweek report also featured several rotational and starting contributors. Safety Kerby Joseph (knee) and running back Craig Reynolds (hamstring) did not practice, while offensive tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder) and cornerback Avonte Maddox (hamstring) were both limited.
Defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad (hamstring), linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (knee), safety Daniel Thomas (forearm), and running back Sione Vaki (groin) were all limited as well. On a positive note, cornerback Terrion Arnold (shoulder) was a full participant. Overall, the Lions appear in better shape than their rivals heading into Sunday’s clash.

Both teams enter Week 9 with injury concerns that could influence the matchup. For Minnesota, getting McCarthy back under center provides stability, but the absences of key defenders like Okudah and Greenard could prove costly. Detroit, meanwhile, looks relatively healthy, with most starters trending toward availability. As practice progresses through the week, Friday’s final report should reveal whether either side gains a crucial edge heading into Sunday at Ford Field.
