Zverev looks to maintain dominance as Fokina chases breakthrough in Paris

Third seed Alexander Zverev is set to face 15th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round of the Paris Masters 2025. The German, one of the top eight seeds, received a first-round bye before rallying past Camilo Ugo Carabelli in three sets. Fokina, meanwhile, opened with a hard-fought win over lucky loser Valentin Royer and followed it up with a straight-sets victory against wild card Arthur Cazaux.

Defending champion Zverev has put together a strong, if somewhat uneven, season. The world No. 3 captured his 24th career singles title on home soil in Munich and reached finals in Stuttgart, Melbourne, and most recently Vienna, where he fell to Jannik Sinner. He also made semifinal runs in Halle, Toronto, and Cincinnati, along with quarterfinal finishes in Rio, Rome, Roland Garros, and Beijing. Statistically, Zverev has struck 539 aces while winning 74% of first-serve points, 31% of return points, and converting 41% of 498 break points.

Fokina, on the other hand, has enjoyed a breakout year, climbing to a career-high ranking of world No. 15 following his runner-up finish in Basel, where he lost to Joao Fonseca. The Spaniard also reached finals in Delray Beach, Acapulco, and Washington, falling to Miomir Kecmanovic, Tomas Machac, and Alex de Minaur, respectively. His other strong showings include semifinals in Monte Carlo and Eastbourne and quarterfinals in Barcelona. Considering injuries and withdrawals in Toronto, Cincinnati, Rio, and London, Fokina has been efficient with 233 aces, winning 68% of first-serve points, and converting 44% of 502 break-point opportunities.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
