The Chicago Bears who are currently 4-3 for the season, added veteran defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to their active roster on Tuesday, filling a critical void left by Kyler Gordon’s placement on injured reserve. The 27 -year-old, a 2019 fourth-round pick, visited Chicago before signing, reuniting with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who was his former head coach and play-caller with the New Orleans Saints. Gardner-Johnson brings versatility and scheme familiarity as the Bears prepare for a tough matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals and their explosive wideouts Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Journey

Gardner-Johnson began 2025 with the Houston Texans after a March trade from Philadelphia. In three games against the Rams, Buccaneers, and Jaguars, he recorded 15 tackles (11 solo). Released on September 23rd, he briefly joined Baltimore’s practice squad before being cut on October 14th. Now in his seventh season, the 6-foot, 208-pound DB thrives in nickel roles, where Allen used him extensively in New Orleans from 2019-2021. There, he notched five interceptions, 21 pass breakups, and 19 penalties.

How Will Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Fit in Chicago?

His aggressive style has drawn flags and controversy. He’s had five since 2022, including two personal fouls in Philly’s 2024 Week 16 loss to Washington. Despite the penalties, Gardner Johnson’s playmaking and slot coverage are proven. And he will fill Gordon’s absence and adds toughness to a Bears secondary, that’s ranked 16th in passing defense currently.

With the Bengals game coming up next, Gardner-Johnson’s experience against elite receivers could be key. His quick trigger and ball skills give Chicago a flexible chess piece in sub-packages. The Bears, desperate for defensive upgrades before the trade deadline, get an instant-impact veteran who knows Allen’s system inside out.
