The third round of the 2025 Shanghai Masters delivered shock after shock as some of the tournament’s biggest names bowed out unexpectedly. Monday saw third-seeded Alexander Zverev suffer a stunning defeat to Arthur Rinderknech, while Cameron Norrie and Denis Shapovalov also fell.

Sunday’s action was equally dramatic, with Jannik Sinner retiring mid-match due to cramping, Taylor Fritz ousted by French qualifier Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, and other notable exits adding to the carnage. Zverev, Sinner, and Fritz Shock the Shanghai Crowd

Third seed Alexander Zverev’s early exit was arguably the biggest upset so far. Facing 54th-ranked Arthur Rinderknech in his opening match, Zverev seemed in control after taking the first set 6-4, but the Frenchman battled back, breaking late in the second set and dominating the decider to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. This marks a second season defeat for Zverev against Rinderknech, who also bested him at Wimbledon earlier this year.

On Sunday, defending champion and second seed Jannik Sinner was forced to retire against Tallon Griekspoor while trailing 6-7(3), 7-5, 3-2, citing cramping in his right thigh amid brutally humid conditions. It was a disappointing end for Sinner’s Shanghai campaign.

Also, fifth seed Fritz’s defeat also rattled fans, as the fourth seed was dispatched by unseeded Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 7-5. The French qualifier produced a flawless performance, not facing a break point and delivering timely breaks late in each set. Fritz struggled to adapt to the oppressive conditions.

Tomas Machac also bowed out after being forced to retire in his second-round match against Mattia Bellucci, trailing 6-2, 6-0. Visible discomfort with a taped knee was noted on site, and his retirement came amid several withdrawals in the brutally humid conditions of Shanghai.

Norrie, Shapovalov, and Others Bow Out

The 30th seed Cameron Norrie’s run ended at the hands of Learner Tien, who defeated him 6-3, 6-4. Norrie had earlier edged past Arthur Cazaux in a tough three-setter but could not sustain momentum against the rising American. The 23rd seed Denis Shapovalov’s campaign also came to a halt, losing 6-4, 6-4 to 15th seed Jiri Lehecka in straight sets.

Eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti survived a tight battle with 26th seed Luciano Darderi, emerging 7-6(5), 7-6(4), while 16th seed Daniil Medvedev overcame 18th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in a match where Medvedev controlled baseline exchanges and denied Fokina rhythm. The 21st seed, Ugo Humbert, also bowed out to 10th seed Holger Rune 6-4, 6-4. The 19th seed, Francisco Cerundolo, was edged out by unseeded Zizou Bergs in a pair of close sets.
