Winner to face Fritz or Mpetshi Perricard in the R16.
No. 10 seed Holger Rune is set to meet No. 21 seed Ugo Humbert in the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters Round of 32 on Sunday. While the Danish sensation reached the pre-quarterfinal stage of this tournament last year, Humbert has already matched his performance from 2024. The winner of this hard-hitting battle will take on either Taylor Fritz or Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the next round. Today, we are going to take a look at the details of this rivalry. Additionally, we will provide you with the best odds (via BetMGM).
Rune made a fabulous start to his Shanghai Masters campaign on Friday, defeating Sebastian Baez in straight sets to advance to Round-3. It has been a year full of ups and downs for the 22-year-old. Despite reaching the Australian Open Round of 16, Rune managed to win just five matches in his first five tournaments. The months of March and April proved to be fruitful for the World No. 11, as he reached the final of Indian Wells before winning the Barcelona Open championship. Since then, a plethora of quarterfinal appearances have given Rune a record of 32-20 in 2025.

Although he has endured a challenging season, Humbert is the No. 1 French player on the men’s circuit. The 27-year-old from Metz is among the most talented left-handers on tour, and announced himself by winning his first six tour-level finals until 2024. Humbert won the Open 13 trophy in February, but failed to remain consistent since then. He has a 19-17 record in the ongoing season, which includes 60% first serves in and 66% service points won. The 21st seed snapped his three-match losing streak by defeating Thompson 6-3 7-6(4) in the Shanghai Round of 64.
Holger Rune has a 4-0 head-to-head record against Ugo Humbert. The Dane has lost only one set across all his encounters against the Frenchman.

While his natural style is attacking, Humbert has been unusually defensive over the past few months. When he would normally charge forward during baseline exchanges, the likelihood of the southpaw taking a few steps back while rallying has significantly increased. If he is to defeat Rune, first strike tennis is the only option. The 22-year-old from Denmark plays a very compact game – dominated by constant changes of direction. Watch out for a high winner count, particularly on the low percentage down the line groundstrokes.
Prediction: Ugo Humbert in three sets.
