Acapulco champion Tomas Machac faces hometown qualifier Sho Shimabukuro in Tokyo.
Fifth seed Tomas Machac opens his Japan Open 2025 campaign against qualifier Sho Shimabukuro in the first round. The Czech has been steadily climbing the ranks, highlighted by his gold medal run in mixed doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside Katerina Siniakova. This season, he broke new ground by winning his maiden ATP title in Acapulco, stunning Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final.
Currently ranked world No. 22, Machac hit a career-high of No. 20 earlier this March. His season has been solid if not spectacular, with quarterfinals in Dallas and Halle, while his best showing came at the US Open, where he pushed into the fourth round before bowing out to Taylor Fritz. Statistically, he remains a threat on serve and return alike, with 236 aces, a 73% success rate on first-serve points, and a 47% break-point conversion rate across 231 opportunities.

Shimabukuro, meanwhile, enters with far less main-draw experience. The 28-year-old holds a modest 4-8 record at the tour level and is still looking for his first breakthrough run. He made his Grand Slam debut in 2023 with first-round showings at Wimbledon and the US Open but hasn’t advanced past the early stages at the ATP level. A three-time Challenger champion, his best moment this year came in Melbourne, where he reached the second round of qualifying. Currently ranked No. 273, well off his career-high of No. 135 in October 2023, Shimabukuro arrives with plenty to prove.

Machac’s blend of experience and a reliable serve makes him the clear favorite. Shimabukuro will draw home support, but his limited main-draw record suggests an uphill battle.
