Lionel Messi’s adventure in Major League Soccer is far from over. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is on the verge of signing a new multi-year contract with Inter Miami. It will keep him at the heart of the club’s ambitious project for atleast two years. Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 and is currently under contract until the end of the 2025 season.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Inter Miami and the Argentine superstar are in the final stages of agreeing to a new multi-year contract. Only minor details are left to finalize before the deal is submitted to MLS for approval. Despite interest from Saudi Arabia, Messi appears committed to continuing his American chapter. The former Barcelona forwards’ impact in MLS has been historic.

Lionel Messi Set To Extend MLS Journey With Inter Miami

This season, Lionel Messi ranks second in the league with 20 goals in 21 appearances while also contributing 11 assists. Across his two MLS campaigns, he has tallied 41 goals and 27 assists in just 46 league matches. Including cup competitions, his record stands at 54 goals in 62 games. He has already become Inter Miami’s all-time leading scorer. Lionel Messi guided Inter Miami to the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.

Messi’s arrival reshaped the Inter Miami squad. Miami brought in Messi’s former Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez to build the team around him, along with nine other Argentines on the roster. The club has also apponited coaches with ties to Messi in an effort to maximize his influence. Sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference, Miami still has games in hand as they chase another postseason run.

Notably, Messi delivered Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph and Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024. Lionel Messi’s contract extension will ensure that his twilight years will continue to shine brightly in the United States, where his presence has already transformed MLS.
