Washington Commanders fans will be happy to know that the D.C. council passed a bill to allow for a new stadium to be built at the existing RFK stadium site, which is currently undergoing demolition. The council is said to have voted 11-2 in favor of the proposal, marking a new beginning for the Commanders and a return to Washington after several years.

More about the Commanders’ return to Washington finally being official as the District of Columbia Council voted in favor of the measure once more — an expected outcome given its vote more than a month ago.

Washington Commanders Stadium Location

With the latest approval from D.C., the Washington Commanders Stadium Location will once again return to the site of the old RFK Stadium in Washington.

That means the Commanders will leave their current home, the Northwest Stadium (known more commonly by its former name, the FedExField). Northwest Stadium had been the home of the Redskins/Commanders since 1997, as they relocated to Landover, Maryland, in search of a place with modern amenities, which was quickly becoming the norm in the NFL.

Making a return to Washington will appease the fan base as the new location provides a true home-field advantage. The Commanders (Washington Redskins at the time) played 35 years in the old RFK stadium from 1961 to 1996, and now the team will be waiting to make an exciting return.

The team’s managing partner, Josh Harris, expressed his joy on social media in being able to bring the team back to ‘its spiritual home’.

Further Details on the New Commanders Stadium

As per the stated timeline, the new stadium is expected to be completed by December 2030, but nothing is set in stone, as challenges can hinder progress. The overall cost of the project is estimated to reach $3.7 billion, making it one of the most expensive stadiums to be built.

Additionally, the council has plans to develop the area around the stadium as well, including retail shops, restaurants, and approximately 5,000 units of residential property. The timeline for the entire development surrounding the stadium complex is slated to be 2040.

The new stadium is expected to have a seating capacity of 65,000, which is slightly less than the 67,617 that the Northwest stadium currently holds.

It is truly a historical day for the city of Washington and the Washington Commanders organization, and its fanbase. With the 2025 NFL season currently underway, and the timeline for the stadium’s completion being December 2030, the Commanders could be back in Washington within 5 seasons if all goes according to plan.
