Former Patriots QB steps in for injured Brock Purdy vs. Saints.
The San Francisco 49ers’ bid to start the 2025 season on solid footing hit a setback in Week 1. Starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who gutted through shoulder and toe injuries in a 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks, had been ruled out to play on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Purdy will miss time after sustaining a “variant of turf toe,” leaving former first-round pick Mac Jones to step in as San Francisco’s starter. The injury is expected to sideline Purdy for at least two to five weeks, adding to a roster already missing George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk.

Michael McCorkle “Mac” Jones is no stranger to pressure. Drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, Jones immediately became the heir apparent to Tom Brady’s legacy. He delivered a strong rookie season, making the Pro Bowl and leading New England to the playoffs. But inconsistency and turnover struggles in the following two seasons saw him lose his starting role, and he was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in March 2024 for a sixth-round pick.
After signing a two-year, $7 million deal with San Francisco this offseason, Jones now finds himself with another chance to prove he can still lead a team.

Jones’ NFL career has been a rollercoaster. Across four regular seasons, he has appeared in 52 games with 49 starts, compiling a 20-29 record. His stat line includes 1,035 completions for 10,590 yards, 54 touchdowns, and 44 interceptions. Known for his accuracy when given protection, Jones has also had 98 sacks and added 419 rushing yards on 145 attempts.
His most recent action came with the Jaguars in 2024, when he started seven games, leading them to a 2-5 record. In Week 13, Jones showed flashes of his Alabama form by throwing for 235 yards and two touchdowns without an interception after relieving Trevor Lawrence. But the momentum was short-lived, and Jacksonville declined his fifth-year option, paving the way for his arrival in San Francisco.

Jones built his football resume at Alabama, where he redshirted as a freshman before seizing the starting role as a junior. His 2020 season was historic, as he set NCAA single-season records for completion percentage (77.4% for 311) and passer rating (203.1% for 4,500 yards) while leading the Crimson Tide to a national championship in the College Football Playoff. In total, Jones went 16-1 as a starter at Alabama, throwing for 6,126 yards, 56 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions.

mma I’m an academic turned sports writer from Raipur, India, specializing in the NFL, MMA, and tennis at The Playoffs. I previously wrote for Sportskeeda and hold a B.A. and M.A. in History. My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
