Sloane Stephens vs. Lucrezia Stefanini Preview, Prediction and Betting Odds for WTA Guadalajara Open 2025 Round-1

Sankalp Harikrishnan

American Grand Slam champ returns to the WTA Tour.

Former US Open champion Sloane Stephens makes a long-awaited return to the WTA Tour with a Round of 32 battle against qualifier Lucrezia Stefanini in the 2025 Guadalajara Open. The American last played a competitive match at the Merida Open, and will be looking for a successful comeback on Tuesday. The winner of this unseeded contest will face No. 4 seed Magdalena Frech in the pre-quarterfinals. Here’s all you need to know about the match-up, including the BetMGM odds.

Sloane Stephens vs Lucrezia Stefanini Match Preview

Owing to her irregularity on the circuit, Sloane Stephens has dropped out of the Top-1000 in the WTA rankings. The 32-year-old experienced her highest moment when she won the 2017 US Open by beating Madison Keys. A former World No. 3 with eight singles championships to her name, Stephens has a 0-4 record in 2025 so far. In her most recent encounter back in February, she won merely 47% points on first serve and 28% points on second serve en route to a straight sets defeat against Petra Martic.

Coming through qualifying with two straight sets wins, Lucrezia Stefanini will be hoping to keep the momentum going. The 27-year-old Italian has a 10-9 record on hard courts over the past year, and managed to win 57% service games during this time. Her last main draw victory on tour came at the Prague Open, where she reached the Round of 16 before losing to eventual champion Marie Bouzkova. Although Stefanini broke into the Top-100 in 2023, she is currently ranked No. 148 in the world.

The head-to-head record between Sloane Stephens and Lucrezia Stefanini is currently 0-0. They will meet each other for the first time at the Guadalajara Open.

Sloane Stephens vs Lucrezia Stefanini WTA Guadalajara Open 2025 Prediction

Stephens is returning from a long break, and might be rusty at the onset. The American tends to lack the pace and efficiency on faster conditions. Despite all the experience she brings to the table, Stephens may find it difficult to adapt to the humid conditions in Guadalajara. On the other hand, Stefanini is high on confidence, and has some match practice under her belt as well. Whoever wins the longer baseline exchanges is likely to emerge victorious.

Prediction: Lucrezia Stefanini in three sets.
