Fabio Cobolli Injury Update – What Happened to Fabio Cobolli, and Why Did He Withdraw From the 2025 US Open Match Against Lorenzo Musetti?

Childhood friends Musetti and Cobolli saw their 2025 US Open clash end in heartbreak.

Flavio Cobolli’s promising run at the US Open ended in heartbreak on Saturday night as the 24th seed was forced to retire in the third round against childhood friend Lorenzo Musetti. Trailing 6-3, 6-2, 2-0, the 23-year-old Italian pulled the plug after struggling with arm discomfort, leaving Louis Armstrong Stadium in a mix of silence and applause. The match closed not with a rally, but with a warm embrace between two friends who have shared the court since their earlier days.

A ‘Bittersweet’ Night for Two Italian Friends

What should have been a celebratory breakthrough for Musetti instead unfolded as one of the most emotional scenes of the tournament. The two have known each other since the age of nine, practicing together, competing on the junior circuit, and sharing countless off-court moments. That history was evident when Musetti addressed the crowd immediately after the match.

“Honestly, I didn’t want to finish like that, especially against Flavio, who is probably my best friend on tour,” Musetti said. “We know each other since [we were] nine years old, and we know pretty well the families. We spend many, many hours together on the court and off the court throughout our careers. So first of all, a big round of applause to Flavio, please.”

Musetti, who came into New York on shaky form, losing five of his last six matches, has steadied impressively since dropping his opening set to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Yet even while acknowledging the personal milestone, he was quick to redirect attention.

“It’s a bittersweet match and a bittersweet end, but of course I’m happy to be in the fourth round for the first time,” he said. “Of course, Flavio, I could see that from the second set he was struggling a bit, but it was still tough to play against him, and I wish him the best of luck to recover soon and to be healthy again.”

Cobolli, who this season lifted titles in Bucharest and Hamburg, revealed he had already been playing on the edge physically. “I had some cramps the other two matches in my fingers and also in my hand, but I played without any problem,” he explained. “Today I started my practice, and I played without pain, but when I tried my serve, I felt something not comfortable in the arm, and it [got] worse in the match.”

Despite treatments during the second set, Cobolli could not continue. His decision left Musetti through to face either Zizou Bergs or Jaume Munar in the fourth round. But the moment was defined less by advancement and more by friendship and the cruel twist of injury that ended Cobolli’s spirited 2025 US Open run.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
