Bayern Munich in Talks with Dayot Upamecano Over New Contract

Ritam Dey

Bayern Munich are locked in negotiations with defender Dayot Upamecano over a contract extension, according to reports from Sky Germany.

The French international, who arrived at the Allianz Arena from RB Leipzig in 2021, has emerged as a key figure under new head coach Vincent Kompany. Despite an inconsistent start to life in Munich, Upamecano has rediscovered his form and looks set to form Bayern’s first-choice centre-back pairing with Jonathan Tah this season.

Contract situation and talks

Upamecano’s current deal expires in the summer of 2026, but Bayern are eager to secure his long-term future and are prepared to offer terms running until 2030. While no agreement has been finalised, there is optimism from both parties that a deal can be struck.

Speaking after Bayern’s emphatic 4-0 pre-season win over Tottenham Hotspur, Upamecano acknowledged the ongoing discussions between his representatives and the Bayern hierarchy, led by sporting directors Max Eberl and Christoph Freund.

The defender’s extension would continue Bayern’s trend of locking down their core stars. In recent months, the Bavarians have successfully renewed contracts for club captain Manuel Neuer, midfield lynchpin Joshua Kimmich, and rising star Jamal Musiala.

Salary demands and external interest for Upamencano

Despite the positive outlook, negotiations are said to be complicated by Upamecano’s salary expectations. At the same time, European giants are monitoring his situation closely. Real Madrid have been linked with the 25-year-old and could potentially explore a free transfer should his contract wind down, reminiscent of the David Alaba saga in 2021 when the Austrian left Bayern on a free to join Los Blancos.

Bayern, keen to avoid a repeat scenario, are prioritising swift progress in talks to keep one of their defensive pillars in Munich for the long term.

Upamecano’s contract situation comes amid a bright start to Bayern’s new era under Kompany. The Bavarians launched their Bundesliga title defence in spectacular fashion, dismantling RB Leipzig 6-0 on opening weekend. Next up, they turn their attention to the DFB-Pokal as they visit lower-league outfit SV Wehen Wiesbaden at the Brita-Arena later today.

For Bayern, ensuring stability both on and off the pitch will be crucial — and tying Down Upamecano to fresh terms is high on the club’s agenda.
