Madison Keys opens her US Open campaign against Renata Zarazua in a first-round clash.
The final Grand Slam of the season is here, and sixth seed Madison Keys opens her US Open 2025 campaign against unseeded Renata Zarazua. Keys has mixed brilliance with inconsistency this year, starting with a quarterfinal in Auckland before storming to back-to-back titles in Adelaide and Melbourne, where she stunned Jessica Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka, and Iga Swiatek.
She followed that up with semifinals in Indian Wells and London, plus quarterfinals in Madrid, Roland Garros, and Montreal. Still, she’s faltered early elsewhere, unable to clear the third round in several tournaments. Her serve remains a weapon, with 212 aces in 49 matches, 67.7% first-serve points won, and a 42.9% break-point conversion rate.

Zarazua, meanwhile, has built her career largely in doubles with 17 ITF and one Challenger title, though she owns eight singles crowns at the Challenger and ITF levels. This season, she hasn’t advanced beyond a second round in singles, including at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Still, she’s been competitive, taking Ajla Tomljanovic and Elena Rybakina to three sets in recent outings. Across 20 main-draw matches this year, she’s managed 17 aces, winning 55.6% of first-serve points and converting 48.8% of break chances.

Madison Keys holds a 1-0 edge over Renata Zarazua in their head-to-head, having scored a commanding straight-sets win in their lone meeting at last year’s Roland Garros.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Roland Garros | Round of 128 | Madison Keys | 6-3, 6-2 |
| Madison Keys | Category | Renata Zarazua |
| 6 | Current Ranking | 73 |
| 431-231 | Career W-L | 377-284 |
| 37-12 | YTD W-L | 20-24 |
| 10 | Career Titles | 0 |
| 1 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 2 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Keys’ firepower and big-match experience should overwhelm Zarazua again, though the Mexican’s scrappy game could test her in patches before the American pulls through.

mma I’m an academic turned sports writer from Raipur, India, specializing in the NFL, MMA, and tennis at The Playoffs. I previously wrote for Sportskeeda and hold a B.A. and M.A. in History. My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
