Lucien Agoume: Manchester United Target Sevilla Midfielder as Baleba Pursuit Cools

Ritam Dey

Manchester United’s summer transfer strategy in midfield has taken another twist, with reports linking Sevilla’s Lucien Agoume to Old Trafford. The Red Devils had been keen on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, but the Premier League side have made it clear that their young talent is not for sale. That setback has pushed United to explore other options as Ruben Amorim seeks to reshape his squad.

Agoume has quickly become an integral figure for Sevilla since arriving from Inter Milan in 2024. His performances were crucial in helping the Andalusian side avoid relegation last season, where his ability to control midfield battles and provide defensive solidity stood out. Still only 23 years old, the Frenchman represents both a short-term solution and a long-term investment for United.

Sevilla Star Emerges as an Alternative

Reports in Spain suggest Agoume is available for around €30–40 million, a fee considerably lower than what Brighton would demand for Baleba. His contract includes a €40m release clause, and Sevilla are said to be open to negotiations provided their valuation is met. For United, this makes him a financially viable option at a time when they need to balance squad upgrades with budgetary caution.

Why Agoume Fits United’s Midfield Needs

The Frenchman’s profile aligns with United’s glaring needs. Agoume ranks among the top midfielders in Europe for tackles and interceptions, averaging 4.73 defensive actions per 90 minutes in La Liga last season. Alongside his defensive work, his range of passing allows him to progress the ball effectively and set the tempo in possession.

With Casemiro entering the twilight of his career and Manuel Ugarte struggling to consistently impose himself, United lack a reliable presence in the heart of midfield. Agoume’s athleticism, ball-winning ability, and technical security could provide balance to Amorim’s system, allowing the attack greater freedom while protecting the back line.

While no formal bid has been lodged, United’s growing interest in Agoume highlights the club’s intent to reinforce midfield options without waiting until 2026 for Baleba. A decisive move in the coming weeks could secure a player ready to make an immediate impact at Old Trafford.
