PSG Stun Spurs With Late Rally to Win First UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain claimed their first-ever UEFA Super Cup title after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over Tottenham Hotspur in Udine on Wednesday night. The French champions were trailing 2-0 with just five minutes remaining. Then they produced a stunning late comeback before sealing the win from the penalty shootout.

The match, contested between the reigning Champions League winners and Europa League holders, looked destined for Tottenham’s trophy cabinet. Thomas Frank’s side dominated for most of the game. Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the first half and captain Cristian Romero doubled the lead shortly after the break.

Tottenham Hotspur in Control, PSG Strike Back

Tottenham’s aggressive press and set-piece routines troubled PSG throughout the game. Undoubtedly, their new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier endured a difficult night. The debutant tipped Joao Palhinha’s effort onto the bar. The rebound ball fell to Van de Ven who reacted quickly to hit the back of the net.

Romero then capitalised on another dead-ball delivery. His header slipped through Chevalier’s hands to make it 2-0. For long spells, PSG struggled to find rhythm, missing key players like Joao Neves and starting with Fabian Ruiz on the bench. Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia offered flashes of threat but failed to make an impact until late in the game.

The turning point came in the 85th minute when substitute Lee Kang-in drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to halve the deficit. Spurs appeared set to hold out but PSG struck again deep into stoppage time. Dembele’s cross from the right found Goncalo Ramos. He bravely headed home to force a shootout.

Penalty Drama Seals PSG UEFA Super Cup Glory

The shootout was tense from the outset. Vitinha missed for PSG early on. However, Chevalier redeemed himself by saving from Van de Ven to level the score at 2-2 after three rounds. Tottenham’s Mathys Tel then failed to convert.

This handed PSG the advantage. Lee Kang-in scored his penalty before Pedro Porro kept Spurs alive. This left Nuno Mendes to coolly slot home the decisive kick. The win marks PSG’s fifth trophy of 2025 and caps a memorable year that has already included their maiden Champions League triumph.

For Tottenham, it was a frustrating end to what had been an impressive performance under their new manager. However it was also a reminder of the ruthless resilience possessed by Europe’s top sides. Especially a reminder for them that they have some distance to go to contest other European giants in finals.
