Washington Mystics Playoff Chances: Can Mystics Reach Playoffs Amid Poor Run?

Akash

Eastern Matchups Critical for Qualification

The Washington Mystics snapped out of a four game losing streak after winning against the Dallas Wings. Their recent losses have come against the Minnesota Lynx, Chicago Sky, Atlanta Dream, and a one-point loss to the Golden State Valkyries.

The side has been fairly inconsistent, but they were constantly ranked around the eighth position in the points table. After their recent performance, the Mystics slipped to the 10th position.

One of the major contributors to their form is turnover volatility. Washington’s late game execution and possession have struggled. They committed 20 turnovers in last week’s loss at Minnesota. This has been a recurring theme in tight games.

The side has averaged 14.2 turnovers per game, a top five league total. Overcommitting in the passing lanes is leading opponents to easy transition buckets, which is negatively affecting defense.

Mystics also have a problem of inconsistent scoring. They go on scoring droughts, which erodes their otherwise solid stretches in the game. When the three isn’t falling and turnover spikes, Washington’s offensive output drops off, giving opponents an opportunity to come back.

Rookies Provide Balance to Inconsistencies

Their rookie core has been a standout that has balanced out the other inconsistencies. Sonia Citron’s two-way impact and Kiki Iriafen’s interior scoring are bright spots. Washington will have to keep them central in late-clock sets and as primary options after timeouts to stabilize possessions and offset turnover risk.

They must also leverage incoming vets to improvise their game. Alysha Clark’s screening, spacing, and physical point-of-attack defense can elevate the team during clutch moments. Bolstering the perimeter defense is also important, as the opponents shoot 36.9 percent from the three against the Mystics.

The Washington Mystics have a 36.7 percent chance to qualify for the playoffs this year, according to ESPN’s Basketball Power Index. With 13 games remaining, the Mystics will have to win most of their Eastern Conference games and split with the heavyweights over .500 down the stretch.
