NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Says ESPN at Liberty To Use ‘RedZone’ Name for Other Sports Including College Football

Sports enthusiasts who follow several sporting events and leagues could soon have the opportunity to keep up to date with the live happenings in all matches from the comfort of their seats.

Following ESPN’s blockbuster purchase of the NFL Network, NFL RedZone, and other league assets, the NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, has acknowledged that ESPN now holds the rights to these assets and can proceed as per its desire.

What that means is that ESPN now has the ability to replicate the NFL RedZone format and use it for various other sports, including college football.

What is NFL RedZone?

For those of you who are unaware of NFL RedZone, it is a sports television channel that comes under the NFL Network. Hosted by Scott Hansen, the channel’s main aim is to bring the best moments from live football games across the country.

Since the NFL has most of its games being played simultaneously on Sundays all over the country, RedZone offers viewers all the best action from these games. Whenever a team enters the ‘Red Zone’ in football, which is from the 20-yard line to the end zone, the live feed switches to that particular game so viewers can see what happens next.

At times, the simulcast also has the ability to split screens and is not just limited to two windows. Red Zone coverage can have as many as 2,3,4 windows all the way up to 10 windows at any given time.

Roger Goodell’s RedZone comments on SportsCenter

Commissioner Goodell joined ESPN’s SportsCenter following the news of the purchase, and when asked about what the NFL’s RedZone will look like now, Goodell maintained that the viewers would not see much of a difference content-wise, but as ESPN now has control over it, the model can be extended to other sports as well.

“It will be the NFL RedZone. I don’t think fans will see any difference to that. Obviously, in the context of that, though, ESPN purchased the RedZone name, and they will be able to utilize that for other sports, college football, and other things. And I think that could be an exciting thing for our fans also to see a RedZone, maybe in college football or other sports. That’s something that they now own and have the ability to do that.”

As exciting as that model has been for the NFL over the years, no other organization has been able to replicate that success elsewhere.

However, now ESPN could try and extend this model to other sports, particularly college football, given that the telecast rights to SEC football are already with ESPN. Nevertheless, it is certainly an exciting proposition that could soon become a reality.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
