NBA Conference Finals 2025: No Legacy Champion Among Final Four, Conference Finalists Break 29-Year Trend

This NBA edition’s postseason is full of unique twists and unbelievable stats. Four teams have now locked their spots in the NBA Conference Finals 2025. The Indiana Pacers will take on the New York Knicks in the East. While in the West, the OKC Thunder will be facing the Minnesota Timberwolves.

For the first time in decades, none of the four NBA Conference Finalists hold a championship title. New York Knicks is the only side that has an NBA title among the four and even that was won back in 1973.

The OKC Thunder have never won an NBA title, although their predecessor, the Seattle Supersonics, claimed one in 1979. Indiana Pacers and the Minnesota Timberwolves have still not won an NBA Championship despite being in the league for more than half-a-decade.

Hence, the current NBA season will prove out to be a historic one for anyone from the fourth Conference Finalists. All the teams are also young and it in itself presents a different story. All the legacy NBA teams have failed to go beyond the semi-finals, thus kicking off a new era in the pro basketball league.

NBA Conference Finals 2025: No California or Texas Teams for First Time Since 1996

The current season’s Western Conference Finals will also be the first in decades without a team from California or Texas state. Teams from the Golden State have won big for years. Primarily, the Los Angeles Lakers and recently the Golden State Warriors have added rings consistently to their trophy cabinet.

The Los Angeles Lakers have won the NBA Title 17 times while GSW has done it 7 times. Texas based teams have also been quite successful. San Antonio Spurs won the NBA title 5 times, Houston Rockets 2 times and Dallas Mavericks once.

This marks the first NBA season since 1996 without a Texas or California team in the Conference Finals. It is a huge feat for these legacy sides. Utah Jazz and Seattle Supersonics were the last pair to participate in the Western Conference Finals away from any Californian or Texas side.

The Timberwolves and Thunder have turned the page in NBA history, ending a 29-year California-Texas streak. Both teams lock horns in the knockout series from Tuesday.
