In a rematch of their Buenos Aires quarterfinal earlier this year, Alexander Zverev and Francisco Cerundolo will lock horns in the Mutua Madrid Open 2025 Round of 16 on Tuesday. The two players are among the ATP’s finest clay court athletes, and are set to renew their rivalry for a spot in the Masters-1000 quarterfinal. The winner of this match will face either Jakub Mensik or Alexander Bublin in the last eight stage.

Alexander Zverev comes into the Madrid Masters high on confidence – the German won the title on home soil last week in Munich. Regaining his World No. 2 ranking from Carlos Alcaraz, the 28-year-old is now searching for his third crown in the Spanish capital. Overcoming a poor run since the Australian Open, Sascha is now on a 7-match winning run. He beat two home favourites in Roberto Bautista Agut and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to reach this stage.

No. 20 seed Francisco Cerundolo said he is “not focusing on Roland Garros” at present, and also indicated that he wishes to keep up his strong record against Zverev. The Argentine lost in the semifinals of Munich last week, but played incredible tennis against Harold Mayot and Francisco Comesaña to make it to the Round of 16. His best result in 2025 is reaching the final of the Argentina Open.

Historically, Zverev has been able to adapt to surfaces and opponents very well. The key for him will be to land a high percentage of first serves, and not let Cerundolo settle into the match. With the Madrid heat playing a role, one can assume that the Argentine will feel more comfortable as the match prolongs. From his point of view, Cerundolo will aim for plenty of forehand to forehand exchanges – something that he thrives on and excels at more often than not.
