Sometimes, things just keep getting worse.

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman had a Sunday to forget at Yankee Stadium, and not just because of his performance on the mound.

It all started with a brutal outing in the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees, where Gausman surrendered six runs on five walks and two hits. He threw a staggering 53 pitches in a disastrous third inning before getting pulled, the most pitches recorded in a single inning since Cam Vieaux threw 56 for the Pirates in 2022, per Elias Sports Bureau.

But Gausman’s day didn’t end there. As he exited, Gausman exchanged heated words with home-plate umpire Chris Conroy, who promptly ejected him. Frustrated and still jawing, Gausman stormed down the dugout stairs… only to lose his footing and take a tumble, hilariously captured by YES Network cameras. Thankfully, he appeared to be fine, though the fall was a fitting exclamation point on a miserable afternoon.

The trouble between Gausman and Conroy had been simmering for a while, with Gausman clearly unhappy about several calls during his short-lived appearance. Manager John Schneider didn’t fare much better; he was tossed in the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

The Yankees cruised to an 11-2 win and eventually sweeped the double-header Sunday against the Blue Jays.
