L.A. Kings Send Top Prospect Liam Greentree to the AHL

Young prospect Liam Greentree set to join Ontario Reign as he continues development in the AHL

After a dominant season in junior hockey, the Los Angeles Kings have officially reassigned standout prospect Liam Greentree to their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign. The 18-year-old winger lit up the OHL this year, finishing third in league scoring with 49 goals and 119 points in just 64 games. His offensive flair didn’t slow down in the postseason either, where he notched 14 goals and 24 points across 11 playoff games for the Windsor Spitfires before their seven-game series loss to the Kitchener Rangers.

Greentree, selected 26th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, was widely considered a steal for the Kings. Heading into the draft, scouts had him projected to go much earlier thanks to his high hockey IQ, relentless drive to the net, and a physically mature frame at 6-foot-2.

Those tools only became more refined this season, especially while playing alongside Washington Capitals prospect Ilya Protas. Their chemistry was electric, with Protas’ hard-nosed playmaking style opening up the ice for Greentree to do what he does best, put up points.

Now, Greentree steps into the pro ranks with momentum on his side. He’ll join the Reign just in time for their Calder Cup Playoff series against the San Jose Barracuda. While the transition from junior to the AHL is never easy, the Kings are hopeful that Greentree’s confidence and skill will translate quickly. It’s uncertain if he’ll dress for Saturday’s game, but should the series stretch, don’t be surprised to see him make his pro debut in a high-stakes moment.

Whether he plays immediately or not, Liam Greentree’s arrival is another exciting chapter in the Kings’ youth movement—and fans won’t have to wait long to see what he can do on the next stage.
