New York Rangers Playoff Scenarios – What needs to happen for the Rangers to clinch a spot in the postseason?

Anamika Shrivastava

A look at what the New York Rangers need to secure their spot in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The 2024-25 NHL season hasn’t gone as planned for the New York Rangers. After entering the year with high hopes and a talented roster, the team struggled to find consistent form when it mattered most. But as the regular season neared its end, the reality set in: the Rangers would not be part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Despite moments of promise and late pushes to stay in the playoff hunt, the Rangers ultimately fell short. With a few key losses and other teams in the race pulling ahead, their chances officially faded.

What Went Wrong for the New York Rangers

Several factors contributed to the New York Rangers falling short of expectations in the 2024-25 NHL season, despite having a roster filled with star power and playoff experience.

One of the biggest issues was inconsistency, both offensively and defensively. The Rangers would look like serious contenders one night, only to struggle the next against teams lower in the standings. Their special teams, which had been a strength in past seasons, also took a step back. The power play lacked the same crisp movement and finishing touch, while the penalty kill failed to hold off key goals in tight games.

Injuries played a role, too. At various points in the season, the Rangers were without key players, including stretches without top-six forwards and reliable defensemen. While other teams managed to adapt, the Rangers’ depth wasn’t as effective as hoped.

Goaltending, usually a backbone for New York, also faced challenges. While Igor Shesterkin remained solid overall, he didn’t steal as many games as in previous years.

What needs to happen for the Rangers?

For the New York Rangers to secure their spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a few key things need to fall into place.

First and foremost, they need to keep winning. With the season nearing its end, every remaining game matters. If the Rangers can close out strong and earn points in each of their final matchups, they’ll put themselves in a much better position to clinch a spot.

Next, they’ll need a little help from other teams. If some of their closest competitors in the standings, like the Penguins, Islanders, or Capitals, start dropping games, it will make the path easier for New York. Even a single loss from a rival can shift the balance and help the Rangers climb the ranks.

It’s also important that the team stays healthy and sharp. Injuries have been a concern at times this season, so staying at full strength and playing with intensity will be key.
