Who will win the first clay court Masters-1000 trophy of the year?
We started with a field of 64, and it is finally down to two men. Both players are clay court maestros, and both of them are medalists from the 2024 Paris Olympics which was contested on the red dirt. Carlos Alcaraz is contesting his first Masters-1000 final in over a year. On the other side of the net is Lorenzo Musetti, who is looking to enter the ATP Top-10 for the first time in his career.
The moment Carlos Alcaraz pulled out his dreaded smile while starting a terrific comeback against Arthur Fils, there was a sense that he was here for the fight. The 21-year-old will contest his third consecutive clay court final – having won Roland Garros and a silver medal at the Olympics last year. He also beat Francisco Cerundolo in Round-1 and overcame Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the semifinal en route to the summit clash.

Lorenzo Musetti has won the first set in just 1/5 matches at the Principality this year. Yet, his ability to paint the lines in the tense moments has set him apart from the competition. By defeating Alex de Minaur in a thrilling semifinal, he entered the first Masters-1000 final of his career. At 23, the Italian has already earned ten Top-10 victories. His other noteworthy victories were against defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas and compatriot Matteo Berrettini.
The head to head record between Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti stands at 3-1 in favour of the Spanish former World No. 1.
Musetti’s only victory in this duel came in the first encounter between the two young guns – at the 2022 Hamburg Open final. Post this, the 23-year-old has failed to take a single set off Alcaraz’s racquet. This will be the third time these two players face off on the hallowed red dirt – the most recent of them coming at Roland Garros in 2023.

Although Carlos Alcaraz is the ATP’s oracle when it comes to adapting tactics to his opponent like a chameleon, the onus will be on Musetti to do so on Sunday. The Italian will aim to catch the Spaniard off guard by taking pace off the ball, whilst also injecting power towards Alcaraz’s backhand. Expect a match that could go deep into the afternoon, as both men thrive on gritting it out, and enjoy taking the scenic route towards success.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz in three sets.
Carlos Alcaraz Win: -400
Lorenzo Musetti Win: +325
